Default I drive a 2005 Honda Civic. Filled the gas tank yesterday - and gas came...

...pouring out of the hole. Why?!!? I know, I know, you're not supposed to top off a gas tank. I always just let it fill until it stops and have never had a problem before. Last night, however, when it stopped I pulled the hose out of the gas tank hole (forgive me as I am not a mechanic). Gas started pouring out all over the ground. It was not coming out of the hose, but out of my car. Why did this happen? Did I just fill it too much or is this something that needs to be looked at? The whole gas leaking thing kind of freaks me out, so any help I could get would be appreciated.

It was just overfilled. Maybe the nozzle didn't detect it in time to auto-shut-off, but it's nothing to worry about. But be very careful next time, you could have potentially started a fire.

I am sure it is nothing to worry about, I think you just put to much gas in it. Good luck.

When you overfill your gas tank you put added stress on your fuel line. That can cause your fuel line to break somewhere and cause gas to leak everywhere. I know this because it happened to me once before.

Yes you over filled your tank and also the back pressure caused it to flow out . I do that some times , nothing to worry about.

I know how you feel. One I first got my Corolla and fill it up with gas. It stop at only nine gallons, so I knew I still had a more to fill up. Then it started to over flow. And I say to myself, this couldn't be it, just nine gallons. But it was true. I was just use to filling up my old truck that took two tanks and were both were about 20 gallons each. These Civics and Corollas are surely good on gas that it is unbeliveable.
